Choose the factory around the product
A good quotation is only one input. Process capability, test coverage and control of the supply chain determine whether a factory fits the project.
The practical lesson
Start with the controlled product definition
For an original development, define the architecture, STEP/STP/3D files, critical tolerances and test requirements before selecting the production network. The best assembly factory may not be the best tooling shop or component supplier. Assign those responsibilities deliberately. OEM/ODM sourcing is a separate route with its own approved specification.
Requirements + engineering files
Select by process and tolerance
Fixtures + testing + traceability
Prove the proposed production route
Verify the result; control the next change.
Conceptual workflow; project-specific limits and acceptance criteria must be defined.
Ask for evidence at the actual line
Check whether the nominated site can perform the required assembly, calibration and functional tests at the planned volume. Review traceability, incoming inspection, subcontracted processes and corrective-action records. Verify who owns the fixtures and data. A certificate or showroom sample alone does not establish capability for your product.
Compare the complete execution cost
Compare quotes against the same BOM, test plan, packaging and acceptance criteria. Include tooling, test equipment, rework exposure, logistics and realistic capacity. Use a pilot to confirm the proposed process. Agree how substitutions, subcontracting and engineering changes require approval before release.
Questions for your next project review
- Which critical operations are performed in-house?
- Can the factory demonstrate the planned test process?
- Who approves a component, tooling or subcontractor change?

Choose the factory around the product—not the product around a factory catalogue. For original development, the engineering files and acceptance criteria come first. Tooling, component supply and final assembly may need different specialists. Compare quotations on the same specification, inspect the actual production and test capability, then verify the route with a pilot. The lowest unit price is only useful when the factory can repeatedly deliver the required product.
